Sharjah Fort (Al Hisn)
The Heart of Sharjah houses the historical Sharjah Fort, which has been transformed into a captivating museum, narrating the emirate’s rich history. Transporting visitors back 200 years, Sharjah Fort offers a glimpse into ancient life, including the governing systems, defense strategies, and daily routines. The museum showcases 400 photographs, capturing significant events in Sharjah’s history, attributed to His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al-Qasimi. Originally serving as the Sharjah government’s headquarters and the residence of the Al-Qasimi ruling family, this coral stone structure was erected in 1823. It comprises a two-story square building, an inner court, and three defense towers. Throughout its long history, Sharjah Fort underwent multiple renovations.
Kalba Fort
Dating back to ancient times, Kalba stands as one of UAE’s most ancient cities. Originally an impenetrable fortress, it has now transformed into a captivating tourist destination on the east coast. Erected around 200 years ago, the fort, designed for defense, comprises two floors and features vertical and circular firing bays, along with a vertical aperture above the windows. Enhancing its significance, Kalba Fort proudly houses a tower in the southeast corner and is encompassed by a wall adorned with spires. Throughout history, this formidable stronghold played a crucial role in surveillance, reconnaissance, and safeguarding the region. After meticulous restoration efforts, Kalba Fort serves as a poignant testament to its historical role in protecting the east coast, while also raising awareness of Kalba’s strategic importance.
Al Ghayl Fort
Al Ghayl Fort, lies south-west of the city of Kalba, this fort sits magnificently at the mountain foothills. One of the oldest ancient forts in the eastern region, Al Ghayl Fort was built over 100 years ago atop a hill that was about 17 meters tall. Visitors can access the fort through the Al Ghayl Reserve and through a rocky road until they reach the top of the fort. Thanks to its strategic location overlooking the Gulf’s east coast, the Al Ghayl Fort was highly important when it came to defense, by securing surveillance of nearby hills.
